Since 1989, Kraft General Foods (KGF), IMAS’ first customer, had a desire to create a repository of all company specifications. A consulting project began called "KGF2000", which was to determine their manufacturing vision. One result of this visionary project was discovering customer's needs in the areas of storing, organizing, and accessing specification information.
In January 1990, KGF began the "Common Specifications System" or CSS project. The project goal was to design, create, and implement a business practices data warehouse for quality standards throughout KGF. Based on the results of this project, KGF decided to develop a software solution. This system was completed in 1997.
Immediate benefits of the CSS system were material consolidation, vendor consolidation, and reduction of redundant specification information.
Kraft benefited from CSS so much that they decided
to move a step higher - Kspec. Kspec is the Xspec program
specifically tailored to meet Kraft's needs. Kraft saw
the potential of many of the features that Xspec had,
and CSS didn't. However, the information and time Kraft
invested into CSS was not lost - IMAS created a simple
conversion of the CSS data to the Kspec program.
